The Construction Labour Foundation this month presented its short online course entitled "Landscaped Roofs", a new training course that is completely free for professionals in the construction sector.
The course launched by the collective, which lasts an estimated 4 hours, is comprised of four units, which cover: living roofs and their composition; types of landscaped roofs, benefits of living roofs; and construction and maintenance.
The aim is to help participants learn the construction characteristics of living roofs and the advantages they bring to buildings and cities.
Living roofs: sustainable urban planning
A living roof, also known as a green, landscaped or ecological roof, is an upper enclosure system for a building that is designed to make it viable to grow vegetation on its upper layer. In order to achieve it, it is necessary to create a system that imitates the functioning of a plant's natural environment, and ensure that the vegetation uses it to grow and stay alive, without damaging the structural, construction and environmental conditions of the building.
Considered to be an important element in sustainable urban planning, living roofs bring multiple benefits relating to the energy efficiency of the building, air quality, biodiversity and the microclimate of cities.
