The research team at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has made progress in establishing "green solutions" to prevent flooding in municipalities on the coast of the Mar Menor in order to reinforce the safety of people during episodes of torrential rainfall. The aim of this work is to create urban habitats that are most resilient to climate change and the effects of torrential rain.
This research will develop one of the lines of work established by the Panel of Experts for Flood Risk Prevention in the Region of Murcia, which was set up by the Autonomous Region after the DANA storm (Isolated Upper Level Depression) last year.
The general director for Territory and Housing, Jaime Pérez Zulueta, took part in a work meeting between the researchers and the technical staff in his department, and announced that the work commissioned from the university on the known nature-based solutions will be concluded in November.
"It's a matter of creating spaces that fulfil a dual function: protecting citizens and naturalising these public spaces", stated the regional director, who emphasised that this is one of the most important pieces of work regarding the layout of urban spaces that fight against atmospheric phenomena.
Pérez Zulueta explained that the objective of this study is to analyse the urban effects of flooding in a sample of localities, as well as to compile a repertoire of architectural, building and urban planning solutions to apply to free urban spaces, based on nature.
