CARM.es - Development awards grants to 26 municipalities to implement Nature-based Solutions

06/01/2022

They are outlined in the Sustainable Architecture and Construction Strategy, which aims to "create healthier public spaces"

The Department for Development and Infrastructure awards 26 municipalities the first grants in order to implement Nature-based Solutions (NBS) to improve urban public spaces, which will receive subsidies for the amount of 400,000 euros in total.

These subsidies are driven by the Sustainable Architecture and Construction Strategy (EACS) with which the regional Government intends to change the model, a new green revolution in architecture and construction with the aim of promoting cities which care for people.

The managing director of Territory and Architecture, Jaime Pérez Zulueta, highlighted that the aim of these grants is to obtain "public spaces in our municipalities which are healthier and safer, with a high standard of environmental quality, so they contribute to creating more sustainable communities".

The municipalities benefiting from these subsidies are Librilla, Ojós, Águilas, Pliego, Puerto Lumbreras, Fortuna, Yecla, San Javier, Jumilla, Alhama de Murcia, Fuente Álamo, Alcantarilla, Cieza, Abanilla, Cehegín, Albudeite, Alguazas, Las Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura, Abarán, Ceutí, Lorquí, Cartagena, Bullas, Totana and Santomera.

"These subsidies will be assigned to funding projects for the sustainable management of rainwater, reducing the heat island effect, air quality or purity and carrying out interventions in urban public spaces," explained the director.

He highlighted that regional Government's promotion of NBS "is a clear commitment to the renaturalisation of cities, since they are one solution to the many challenges we face nowadays such as adapting to climate change, natural resource management or reducing flooding".
