The Sustainable Construction and Architecture Strategy for the Region of Murcia (EACS) will represent a change to the model of designing housing and cities in the Region of Murcia, since the new parameters it sets are aimed at improving the health of people and reducing the energy consumption of homes.

That was the announcement made today by the regional minister for Development and Infrastructures, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, during the closing speeches of the 3rd 'Committed to Sustainable Housing' Forum organised by the Murcia regional television channel La 7, in which he highlighted the importance of propagating the measures that drive the EACS as part of this "transition process towards friendlier architecture that creates cities that look after people".

The coronavirus pandemic has made us rediscover the importance of our domestic spaces as places where we feel safe", stated Díez de Revenga, indicating that the Regional Government has public subsidies available for families hit by the economic crisis caused by coronavirus, which aim to "ensure continuity in their homes".

The minister stated that the EACS is the response to the new approaches to housing that emerged from Covid, which has brought about a need to rethink our homes in terms of eco-efficiency, and "the regional government is proposing a roadmap with measures that are applicable to the building process which promote the renaturalisation of cities".

The strategy, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the European Urban Agenda, aims to encourage maximum-efficiency energy installations, and the use of living roofs and vertical gardens, as well as all of the nature-based solutions which, as well as improving air quality, minimise the impact of floods.

Furthermore, it also promotes a culture of prolonging the useful life of buildings, encouraging their maintenance or renovation, as well as the recovery of construction and demolition waste, which will foster an industrial symbiosis with other production sectors.

"We encourage the use of materials and components that minimise the carbon and water footprint, and modular construction systems that that allow the building to be dismantled in such a way that the products can be reused and recycle," the minister explained. He said the strategy proposes the design of flexible spaces that can be adapted to other uses simply, without having to make costly investments that furthermore generate substantial amounts of waste.
