Impact. In a digital meeting organised by LA VERDAD and sponsored by the Autonomous Region, experts defended the decision to adapt urban planning to climate change in order to reduce the risk of flooding

The 12th September 2019 was a turning point in the Region of Murcia. After the DANA (Isolated Upper Level Depression) storm, the regional government made it a priority to adopt measures with the aim of reinforcing the safety of people and minimise material damage during torrential downpours. For that purpose a panel of experts was created, which has studied and analysed the phenomenon of the latest floods to decide on concrete actions to prevent the risk of flooding in the areas most affected, as well as more general measures. These include Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).

One of the actions for the prevention and control of flood risk is land use planning. Against the backdrop of the Land Use Plan for Flood Risk Prevention (Potpri) that the regional Administration is currently working on - the impact of land use planning was debated yesterday in thewebinar' 'Flood Solutions', organised by LA VERDAD newspaper and sponsored by the Autonomous Region.

The session, which was the last in a round of four sessions dedicated to broadcasting the proposals made by the panel of experts, was chaired by the newspaper's head of local affairs, Manuel Buitrago. The participants were Jaime Pérez Zulueta, head of Territory and Architecture at the regional government, and member of the expert panel; Jorge Olcina Cantos, commissioner of the Vega Baja Renhace Plan and professor at the University of Alicante; the specialist architect in town planning and land use planning Rafael Pardo Prefasi, and Cristóbal Ruiz, head of town planning at TM Grupo Inmobiliario.
