EACS Pilot Project of a living roof in Alcantarilla

Nature-based solutions cover a large variety of techniques, such as green pavements which help reduce the ambient temperature in summer or fix carbon captured from the atmosphere, sustainable drainage systems which can store rainwater, or living roofs which help to renaturalise urban environments, whilst also contributing to the retention of pollutants, reducing the heat island effect, improving local biodiversity, as well as improving the thermal conditions of the building where they are implemented.

It is hoped that this living roof will not only contribute to the urban green transformation and energy efficiency, but will also help raise awareness of the importance of preserving the environment, promoting citizen participation in the creation and use of these installations.

This project is designed as a pilot experiment to demonstrate and show an example of the behaviour of extensive living roofs. From this prototype on a public building in a municipality in the region, we aim to determine which aspects of the design can be established as part of the optimum template to be replicated in similar environments.
